One Anasazi ruin open to the public at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is Defiance House, located in Forgotten Canyon north of Halls Crossing. This location was a small village or pueblo, that included dwelling areas, storage rooms, work areas, and a kiva. The name Defiance House was suggested to archaeologists because of the war-like figures brandishing swords and holding circular shields that are painted on the wall above the structures. Defiance House was probably occupied from about 1250 to 1300 A.D.
Then, for reasons still not fully understood, the Anasazi left the canyonlands, as well as the larger centers such as Mesa Verde, almost as swiftly as seeds borne away on the river. Some suggest the Anasazi moved south and became the ancestors
